That might leave you wondering, do you actually need supervision after taking it, and if so, for how long? It is a good question, and honestly, it is one of the more important things to understand before you start treatment, since it affects how you plan your day, your work schedule, and even your ride home.
Why is Supervision Required?
SPRAVATO® is a nasal spray you take yourself, but you never do it alone at home. Every dose is given at a certified clinic, under the watch of a trained healthcare provider. You will sit comfortably in a treatment room, use the nasal spray as directed, and then simply relax while your body responds to the medication. Once you have taken SPRAVATO®, you are required to stay at the clinic for at least two hours while our staff monitors you.
This is not just a formality. SPRAVATO® can cause temporary
side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, a floating or dissociative feeling, and changes in blood pressure. These effects are usually mild and tend to fade within that two hour window, but your provider needs to confirm you are stable before you leave. Your blood pressure will typically be checked before your dose and again at intervals afterward, just to make sure everything is trending in the right direction. This kind of close supervision is a core part of what makes SPRAVATO® safe to use, even though the medication itself is powerful.
What About Getting Home After Treatment?
Here is the part that catches many patients off guard. Even after you are cleared to leave the clinic, you cannot drive yourself home on the day of your treatment. The lingering effects of SPRAVATO® can impair your judgment, coordination, and reaction time in ways you might not even notice yourself. Because of this, you will need to arrange a ride, whether that is a friend, family member, or rideshare service, for every single session. You will also want to avoid driving, operating machinery, or making any major decisions for the rest of that day. Most patients feel back to normal by the next morning after a full night of sleep, and it is considered safe to drive again at that point.
