Matthew Umbrell is a Resident in Counseling originating from Reston, Virginia. Matthew studied psychology at the University of Virginia before earning a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the College of WIlliam & Mary, and has experience working with individuals, families, groups, and children in diverse therapeutic settings. Matthew prefers a person-centered approach to counseling, working alongside clients to set goals, monitor progress, and overcome obstacles throughout treatment. Matthew incorporates techniques from a variety of different therapeutic modalities to accommodate unique client needs, including elements of Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Matthew is proficient in working with a range of presenting concerns for counseling, including managing anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, trauma, relationship concerns, and behavioral issues. Matthew offers a direct and supportive counseling style, holding space for the difficult parts of life we move through while empowering insight and change. His goal is to lighten the load clients carry and support opportunities to enact positive change.
Matthew is currently pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and is registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling. He provides clinical services under the supervision of Dr. Grace Hipona, LPC. As a Resident in Counseling, he does not provide services independently and does not submit insurance claims on his own.
